Damilola Adeleke, an Oyo State-based businessman, has narrated how he was harassed by police officers in Ogbomosho, Oyo State, for being able to afford a car.

Adeleke, who shared videos and pictures of himself and his fiancée on Twitter, stated that the officers physically assaulted them because they kicked against extortion.

“We were on our way to my mum’s retirement party when these officers stopped us around Ikoyi, the street behind Kersey Children Home in Ogbomosho,” Adeleke told FIJ.

“When these officers stopped us, they asked to search my car, and I allowed them. They then checked my car documents and didn’t find anything incriminating. Then, they went on asking about the type of job I do and how I was able to afford the car, and I told them I am a businessman.”

Adeleke also explained that his fiancée’s plan to secretly record the incident as the police said he would have to go to the station to explain his job and how he could afford his car led to her being physically assaulted by them.

He said the officers hit her in the hand and this led to her sustaining injuries. Adeleke also said the officers damaged her phone in the process.

“I don’t know the name of any of them, but people said one of them, Idris, from Owode Police Station is quite notorious,” Adeleke said.

Adeleke said he eventually raised the alarm as the assault continued. He said the officers left the scene with his car documents when a crowd was beginning to gather.

FIJ made several calls to Adewale Osifeso, the Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, but he did not answer them. He had also not replied to an SMS sent to him at press time.
