03.02.2023 Featured Protest Over Scarcity of Fuel and New Banknotes Turns Violent in Ibadan

Frustrated by the nationwide scarcity of fuel and redesigned banknotes, Oyo State residents thronged the streets of Ibadan on Friday to express their grievances.

In some videos on Twitter and Instagram, the residents flood Secretariat, Iwo Road, Agodi Gate and the Monatan area of the state in protest.

A video shows angry residents vandalising a Wema Bank property. An Ibadan-based source, who did not wish to be named, told FIJ that besides naira notes scarcity, people were protesting fuel scarcity and rising pump price.

In another video got online, angry protesters destroy some offices and properties of the Oyo State Government’s secretariat.

This protest is happening amid reports that many bank managers are selling the new naira notes to politicians, limiting access of the masses to cash.

FIJ had reported long queues at banks, high POS charges and non-dispensing ATMs in various parts of the country.
