The House of Representatives has approved a bill for a second reading that seeks to remove immunity conferred on the vice president, state governors and their deputies.
On Wednesday, the reps voted in favour of 42 bills. This one, they said, would curb corruption, enhance accountability and help in the fight against impunity.
A day earlier, the green chamber passed 39 bills for second reading. Wednesday’s plenary brought the total number of passed bills to 81.
FIJ understands that it is not the first time the bill has got legislative backing for a second reading. In 2020, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege proposed the legislation.

On March 13, 2020, the Senate passed the bill for a second reading.
The bill was titled, “An act to alter the provisions of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, to qualify criminal liability for certain public officers under Section 308.”
Its aim was to amend Section 308 of the Principal Act and introduce a subsection to replace subsection 2.
According to Omo-Agege’s proposal, beneficiaries of the immunity clause currently in the constitution would lose it if indicted by the court after a thorough police and antigraft agency investigation.
