A policeman in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, caused a traffic standstill on Friday evening as he searched for change after collecting a bribe from a driver.

@D_e_i_n, an X user who witnessed the incident, made a post about this incident at 8:46 pm on Friday via his handle.

He shared a clip of the policemen transacting with the driver along Ikwere Road by Kala Police Station in the capital city of Rivers State. @D_e_i_n also mentioned how he and others were stuck in traffic for over 35 minutes because of the policeman’s actions.

The Port Harcourt resident shared the post to express his frustration at how the policeman kept everyone waiting just to find change.

Wetin pain me pass na say e dey keep the whole line waiting to find change. Like, I was in that taxi stuck at that particular place for more than 35 minutes. Why?” @D_e_i_n wrote on Saturday morning.

Some policemen’s relationship with bribery, corruption and brutality is no longer news in Nigeria. And rather than abate events like this Port Harcourt incident, they reinforce this negative perception of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

On Thursday, policemen attached to the Ilogbo Elegba station in the Ojo area of Lagos State abducted Peter Oriyomi, a resident of Shibiri, alongside six other residents without explaining why.

When Oriyomi’s children visited the station, the police demanded N200,000 to secure his release.

On Wednesday, policemen brutalised an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and injured residents of an estate in Osun State.

In early October, Braimoh Abdulmatin, a content creator, told FIJ that some Lagos policemen flogged and extorted N119,000 from him. They accused him of being a cultist without proof, forced him to make a statement and took his money.

The police equally chased Temitope Oyetade, a Lagos resident, to his death on October 16. They also kidnapped a 17-year-old and demanded a N50,000 ransom under the guise of bail.
