The Skyway Aviation Handling Company (SAHCO) has sacked Isaac Gbolahan Ogumefu, one of its employees who extorted N100,000 from Oyewale Oyesiji, an Osun State-based automobile engineer.

The development was made known in an email that was sent to FIJ by the company on Monday.

“Thank you for your concern regarding the recent report about the allegation of extortion which involved ONE of our staff and not three as alleged,” the email from SAHCO reads.

“Please be assured that SAHCO maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy towards any form of misconduct. In line with this, the employee in question is no longer in the employ of SAHCO.

“We would like to use this opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to providing the highest quality service in the aviation sector while upholding the highest ethical and professional standards in all our operations.”

On December 25, FIJ reported how Ogumefu embarrassed, harassed and extorted N100,000 from Oyesiji for booking one flight ticket to travel to South Africa with Air Cote d’Ivoire and another ticket to return to Nigeria with Asky.

While the extortion went on, Ogumefu said he would not allow Oyesiji to fly because he had not booked his return ticket with the same airline. The incident happened on December 1.

At first, the SAHCO employee demanded a N300,000 bribe from the engineer to allow him to fly to his destination. When the engineer told him he did not have that kind of money with him, he resorted to taking a N100,000 bribe from him.

Feeling he had been exploited because he was a first-time traveller, Oyesiji told his friend about the incident and his friends in turn posted his story on X, the microblogging site.

When SAHCO officials realised the matter had become viral on Nigeria’s social media space, they quickly reached out to Oyesiji, begging him to tell his friends to take down their posts and promising him the N100,000 Ogumefu took from him would be refunded.

By the time Oyesiji landed in South Africa, he found out the N100,000 Ogumefu forcefully took from him had been refunded. He, however, told SAHCO to investigate the incident and ensure that Ogumefu received appropriate punishment for the trauma he caused him.

Sacking is not enough for the criminal conduct of that SAHCO member if staff. He has conducted a crime of extortion and should have been handed over to the Police for prosecution.

Further, the victim of the SAHCO extortion dhould be compensated for the bad experience and trauma he went through in the hands of their member of staff.

Has the money been recovered and restored to the passenger?, There should be other punitive measures adopted because the staff has famil and dependants, the underground stealings amongst top notches have not been met with such measure. People should be given opportunity to repent and restitute thats how sane societies are built.
