On Saturday, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu published a response to opposition politicians’ alliance with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general election on the official X and Facebook pages of the state.
Sanwo-Olu used Lagos State Government’s official social media accounts to share partisan political content in support of President Bola Tinubu and violated government-set guidelines for ethical communication on digital platforms.
In his message, Sanwo-Olu dismissed the new alliance, which includes former vice president Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, former AGF Abubakar Malami, and ex-governors Nasir El-Rufai and Rauf Aregbesola, as a “mere distraction”.

“Advocates of a coalition to wrest power from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027 have got a firm reply to their ambition. It will fail,” the governor stated.
He further declared, “Nigerians will never go back to Egypt.”
“President Tinubu knows the game and will never fall for their bait.”
These posts violate Section 3.2 of the 17-page Code of Practice for Nigerian Digital Platforms, published by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).
The section clearly states that government officials, in using social media, must “not publish personal opinions on official Social Media accounts,” and must ensure that all posts are “factual, ethical, respectful, apolitical, impartial and professional”.
Sanwo-Olu’s remarks continued in the official posts, as he praised the president’s leadership and listed policy gains such as tax reforms, the student loan scheme, improved infrastructure and the new national minimum wage.
“President Tinubu is not only a builder of men but a visionary leader whose impact is evident across the nation,” the governor said.
This adds to a growing trend of government agencies and executives using official social media accounts to publish partisan messages or defend political interests.
In March, the Nigerian Presidency used its X account to promote All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Monday Okpebholo during the Edo State governorship election.

That post quoted Vice President Kashim Shettima urging voters to support the APC, claiming it would secure higher federal revenue for the state. The statement contravened Section 95(2) of the Electoral Act of 2022, which prohibits using state resources for campaign purposes.
Similarly, FIJ previously reported how the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) had used its official handle to publish opinion pieces to defend its controversial policies and attack critics.
