On Sunday, the media was awash with reports of a container falling on a bus on Ojuelegba bridge in Lagos.

Nine occupants of the bus died in the accident, while one woman survived.

Following the fatal accident, several Nigerians called for the Lagos State Government to take stringent measures to prevent such incidents from re-occuring.

FIJ has now found that since 2014, trucks with containers have fallen at least once a year on the bridge.

2014: In November 2014, a trailer attempting to climb the Ojuelegba bridge late at night fell off the bridge and landed on an unoccupied commercial bus.

There were no casualties on that occasion.

2015: On September 2, 2015, another container fell on the same Ojuelegba bridge, claiming the lives of three people in the process.

A couple was killed in their vehicle, while the lone occupant of another vehicle died in the accident.

2016: A 40-feet container disengaged and fell on the Ojuelegba bridge in 2016. This was the third occurrence in three years on the same bridge.

2017: Residents of Ojuelegba on Sunday, July 8, 2017, woke up to the gory sight of a black Toyota Camry trapped under a container.

The accident occurred at Stadium Bus Stop, some distance away from the Ojuelegba area. The lone occupant of the Toyota died in the accident.

2018: In 2018, a truck conveying plywood through the Ojuelegba bridge fell and emptied its contents on the bridge.

This accident occurred in June, and three commercial buses and a car were affected. Three persons died.

2019: Seven cars suffered degrees of damage after a truck rolled back on the Ojuelegba bridge in April 2019.

No lives were lost, but vehicles were affected. The truck, according to reports, did not suffer brake failure, but succumbed to the weight of its container.

2020: At about 5:41 am on November 29, 2020, Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA) reported a lone accident involving a truck on Ojuelegba bridge.

The truck was laden with plywood but emptied its contents on the bridge, blocking the road in the process.

2021: In September of 2021, a Toyota Camry with four occupants was trapped under a truck that fell on the Ojuelegba bridge.

The upteenth occurrence, and a now-familiar theme in the area. No lives were lost, but emergency responders said the occupants only escaped death by a whisker.

2022: A middle-aged man was crushed to death in his car after a truck hit him on the bridge.

He was brought out from under the wreckage dead.

Sunday’s incident was the ninth in nine years.

FIJ called Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Director-General (DG), for comments.

He faulted vandals for removing metal barriers around the bridge, which should have prevented the trucks from falling over.

He also said truck drivers were failing to do due diligence in securing their containers to their trucks.

“It is possible that accidents over the years have damaged the barriers, but if it was the accidents, you would still see the metal,” Oke-Osaynyintolu told FIJ. “They have been vandalised. These accidents could have been avoided.”

He said the state had been making efforts to sensitise people but human error meant the accidents continued. He also said trucks ply Lagos roads more than other roads in the country and are prone to accidents.
