Morenikeji Ayodele, a student based in Ondo State, has narrated how N120,900 disappeared from her First Bank account on May 31.

Ayodele told FIJ that her money was deducted in a succession of N98,000, N10,800, N12,000 and N100.

“My account was emptied over the night into a SportyBet account with the narration ‘Online payment – Sporty’, which I have no affiliations with,” she said.

“I went to First Bank to complain and they said that a SportyBet wallet was used and that it could not be traced. They further said the transaction couldn’t have been done without my ATM card.

“Meanwhile, I had my ATM card with me when it happened. They said the person who carried out the transaction must have possibly snapped my card.

Ayodele said First Bank told her there was nothing they could do about it.

“After the complaint, First Bank said there was nothing they could do about it. I had to block my ATM instantly and also freeze my account,” she said.

While responding to FIJ’s email for comments, First Bank said the customer must have compromised her card details for the debit to have been successful. The bank also stated that it was not liable for any loss incurred by the customer.

“The bank is not liable for any loss suffered due to the said transaction(s), as such a transaction is termed a ‘self-service’ transaction, where the opportunity to confirm the transaction details is provided before the transaction is authorised,” they said.

When presented with these claims, Ayodele insisted that her card had always been in her care.

“My card is always in my bag. I didn’t give it to anyone. Even when the incident happened, my card was with me. I didn’t receive any OTP from them either. I just woke up to see the debits,” she said.
