The just-concluded presidential election saw four frontrunners leading the pack of 18 political parties that fielded candidates.
In line with Section 134, Subsection 2 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, none of the candidates will be deemed elected unless he has secured “not less than one-quarter of the votes cast” in two-thirds of Nigerian states and the FCT.
By “one-quarter of the votes cast”, the provision explicitly requires either of Peter Obi of the Labour Party, Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party to score 25% of votes in at least 24 states.
To determine a winner that would govern the country for the next four years, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) commenced the process of collation and tabulation at its national collation centre in Abuja on Sunday.
Results collated from more than 18 states and the FCT have been announced by the electoral umpire.
