At least 60 locals across five communities in Zamfara State have been killed by terrorists invited to the forest by Bello Turji, a notorious bandit leader.

Daily Trust reports that some communities affected by the attack that happened between Wednesday and Thursday are Kurfa Danya, Kurfa Magaji Rafin Gero, Tungar Isa, and Barayar Zaki in the Bukkuyum and Anka local government areas of the state.

“A bandit leader known as Shehu Bayade is the spearhead of deadly raids, kidnappings and cattle rustling in communities in Anka, Bukkuyum, and Gummi local government areas of the state,” a resident simply identified as Babangida was quoted to have said.

“We believe Turji and his boys were invited by Shehu Bayade to that forest. This is because, in their own thinking, making the vast forest their abode will make their detection by Nigerian Air Force (NAF) aircraft harder, unlike where they left.”

Describing the manner of invasion, the eyewitness further noted that the terrorists “came in a very large number and on motorbikes, firing at residents and torching residential houses and food stores”.

Babangida also said, “The residents, especially women and children, scampered to safety. Some of them are taking refuge in Bukkuyum Local Government Area and some other relatively safer communities.

“The whereabouts of dozens of other residents are still unknown. Up to the wee hours of Thursday, displaced persons were keeping up in Nassarawa Burkullu community. Some of them sustained serious injuries from gunshots.”

Armed men loyal to Bello Turji, who were displaced by air force attacks on their enclaves in Fakai Forest, Shinkafi Local Government Area of Zamfara State, are regrouping in another forest in the western part of the state.

Turji has been seeking an amnesty from the Nigerian government. He addressed a letter to President Muhammadu Buhari, Governor Bello Matawalle of Zamfara State, and the Emir of Shinkafi for a peace summit to discuss issues around marginalisation of Fulanis and the return of bandits to their communities.

However, the Nigerian government has intensified efforts to end the activities of Turji and his cohorts by officially declaring bandits terrorists. In a gazette signed by Abubakar Malami, the Attorney-General of the Federation, the government affirmed that intelligence reports showed that the criminal groups masterminded several killings, abductions, rapes, kidnappings, and related acts of criminality in the northeast, north-central, and other parts of the country.

Muhammad Shehu, the spokesperson of the state police command, didn’t answer FIJ’s calls for comments on the recent attack. He has also not responded to a text message sent to him.
