Charity Ijese Omole, the woman at the forefront of the recall campaign against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, suspended lawmaker representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, has hinted at the process being “a game”.

Omole is the Senior Special Assistant on Youths and Women Mobilisation to Kogi State Governor Ahmed Ododo. She is also the spokesperson for Kogi Central Women Development Association.

Hours after she submitted the recall petition to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on behalf of the constituents on Monday, she wrote on her Facebook page, “Undeterred, Unbroken, Unbent. So well you know, the game is the game.”

FIJ found that she made a similar statement when journalists interviewed her at the INEC office shortly after the recall petition was submitted and received by the electoral commission.

In a video clip sighted by FIJ, she said the constituents, under a group known as “Concerned Kogi Youths and Women”, signed the recall petition because of their “loss of confidence” in Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan.

“…No confidence in her because of her gross misconduct in the Senate that led to a six-month suspension where the Kogi Central will not be represented at the National Assembly, the Senate arm. We have come to recall her so that we can have a representative in the Senate because as a people we cannot afford not to have a representative in the Senate arm for another one year. We are here to tell INEC to follow the constitutional process for her recall so that the process can begin,” said Omole.

When asked who was bankrolling their activities, she said, “It is a personal business, a personal thing. We are members of her constituents and we are saying we don’t want her anymore because we cannot afford to not have a representative. Nobody is bankrolling us. We are the ones who voted for her, and we are saying we don’t want her anymore. Nobody is bankrolling. Nobody is having any personal issues with her. It is just what it is. The game is the game.”

‘The game is the game’ is an expression which is usually a witty and self-aware justification for one’s questionable actions.

Omole also claimed that out of the 488,000 registered voters in Kogi Central, more than 250,000 have appended their signatures to the petition.

FIJ earlier reported that recall petitions must be signed by more than 50 per cent of registered voters in a constituency after which INEC would verify the signatures and conduct a referendum. A referendum is considered successful when the ‘Yes’ votes exceed 50 per cent of the registered voters.

Meanwhile, further checks on Omole’s Facebook page reveal that she shared and pinned a post by Facebook user Hamza Yakubu, suggesting that she agreed with his submission.

Yakubu’s post reads: I often find myself amused when people discuss politics with such passion and emotion. But let’s face it, emotions may drive temporary reactions, but they don’t dictate the true nature of politics. At its core, politics is a game, driven by logic and strategy.

Opposition and conflicting interests are inevitable in this game. One day, the tide may be in your favor, but the next, your opponents might outmaneuver you. That’s the reality of politics.

And here’s the thing: truth in politics is relative. What’s true for you might not be true for everyone else. So, instead of getting caught up in emotions, let’s focus on playing the game with finesse.

Because, in the end, that’s what politics is, it’s a game. And the person with the superior strategy wins. So, believe what you believe, and I’ll believe what I believe.
