Aisha Abdullahi, a Kaduna resident, did not initiate any transaction in November, but N600,000 vanished from her account. To prevent a recurrence, she got a new ATM card on January 15. Barely a month later, an unauthorised transaction wiped off N1.080 million from her Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) account.
Abdullahi told FIJ she still found it hard to believe such large amounts were withdrawn from her account in one day when her daily limit was N100,000.
She also said she believed her N1.68 million went missing due to negligence from the bank because each time she visited the bank, they told her they could not help her.

According to Abdullahi, the first incident happened on November 3 when she was on her way home. She had not initiated a transaction online but got one-time passwords up to 10 times. While she was still wondering about the reason for the OTPs, she decided to visit her bank on Monday (the next day).
“Before I knew it, they had removed N600,000. The following Monday, I went to a GT Bank branch in Ikorodu, Lagos, to complain. They gave me a card dispute form, which I filled out and blocked the card immediately,” Abdullahi told FIJ.
“That same day, I received an email that the transaction was successful and that they couldn’t trace the recipient of the transaction. They said the only thing they could do was to block the card for future recurrence. After that, I sent several emails to GT Bank but didn’t get any reply until today.”

Abdullahi left Lagos for Kaduna after the incident and requested a new ATM card on January 15 to prevent any possibility of unauthorised transactions. But this did not protect her.
On February 20, she withdrew N8,000 from a point of sale. Some minutes later, over N1 million was debited from her account.

She said she received 12 OTPs on February 20 and a message that showed N1.080 million had been debited from her account. She said it was as if someone was monitoring her account.
“I rushed to the bank branch immediately, but as they did in Lagos, they gave me a card dispute form. The bank’s representative I met told me the transaction was still pending. To some extent, GT Bank was negligent,” Abdullahi told FIJ.

“My daily limit is N100,000, but in February, N100,000 left my account 10 times and N40,000 twice. But while my balance on SMS showed N5,000, the one I got via email was different. But on February 22, a few minutes after I had filled out a form in the bank, I started receiving debit alerts of that transaction.
“I went to the bank again, but they said there was nothing they could do about it. It was a new card. I got the card on January 15. The representative said they could not trace the money as it was transferred to a bet site. I feel like someone was monitoring my account.”
FIJ emailed GT Bank on Tuesday for comments, but at press time, the bank had not responded.

Until bank’s start paying for their negligence, customer funds, customer’s information is at risk, how money take fly now? It’s obvious their system is compromised, more reason they should have blocked the first card and investigate throughly.
The bank should be held accountable to an extent. Those points of sale involved should be investigated as well.
GTB again? The complaint I made last year concerning a failed but debited POS transaction was not checked despite visiting the bank 5 times. That have a lot to answer.
Next time change your phone number or block your account right away, anytime you receive short code you didn’t initiate, please first thing to do, delete it. If the short code continues more than two times call the customer care and request for account restrictions until you clarify everything. These yahoo guys are cloning people ATMs and you can be a victim. Also any where you use POS,make sure the operator is not capturing the numbers on the ATM.
The fraudulent act is leaves between the banks… The know about those missing money..
I even used my contact at CBN and got a letter for them, it’s been 2 years now they have sent back my money, 78,000.
No wonder they are declaring humongous profits. God will judge us all
I have got tired of reading how people have been losing money from GT accounts and the bank’s clear refusal and tricky attitude to these complaints. It’s obvious there is internal compromise and insiders making these possible. These incidents are fewer in other banks. It often GT all the time. People should be wise and move their funds where it’s safer.

Every time careless people tend to blame the bank for their carelessness, someone knew her PIN both old and new, and the bank use to strongly advise customers to change PIN after collection of ATM cards
The report states that the complainants’s transaction limit is 100,000 per day and you blaming her of carelessness on a transaction of 1,080,000 in one day common bro the bank should explain this fraudulent act pls.
I have 0 confidence in GTBank. I refuse to fund or carry out transactions for my businesses via my GT accounts even though I have had them for years. Events such as this lady’s predicament, are what even drives my point home.
Insider scam ring. They know the culprits and are not willing to plug the hole anytime soon.
N1.68m to thieves despite reporting the incident and replacing her ATM card, yet GTBank refuses to help. That’s Internal compromised, I urge financial lawyers to offer pro bono services and support this woman in seeking justice against GTBank’s negligence of customers confidentiality, integrity. Let’s stand together against financial exploitation! #JusticeForTheWoman #FinancialJustice #GTBankAccountability”
Carry lawyer and claim 100m damages.
Let her go to court of law and lodge in her complain, they most have do something for her by God’s grace.
Report the issue to Central Bank and narrate everything that happens both the first and second incident , I bit you your money will be return.
When you changed your arm card to a new one, it’s possible you did not change your 4-digit pin and you will continue experiencing this. Change your pin number
GTB will not respond or do anything, it happens to me here in Ibadan Ring Road Branch up to this moment heard from them. In my own opinion there is an insider that perpetrator this act. You better move your money from the bank to other place.
It’s a pity this is happening in GTB… the bank that I trusted with my everything. But how on earth won’t they find how the money was debited after when her daily limit is 100k and that whole amount of money was withdrawn on a goal?? But seriously had it been she loan some amount of money from all these useless banks, you will never send the money to her as multiple times as that. Seriously, she ought to arrest the so called Manager of that very branch and let’s see if they won’t find something to do on her account.
Sometimes people compromise their accounts, but they deliberately that part of the gist when narrating series of events.
Whilst we demand for more from the banks, we should not forget to hammer on the responsibility of the customer.
Media outlets should also educate people on different schemes used by these fraudsters to get sensitive details from unsuspecting bank customers.
Lastly, I believe there should be a legislation forcing these online vendors to release details of any of their customers accused of fraudulently using another person’s card details on their site. KYC is key, if the online vendor or merchant cannot provide the details of their clients, they should be made to refund.
Why still banking with them after the first fraud withdrawal and they even told you that cud not help you?
I experience exactly same, money was withdrawn from my account, I rushed to the bank to complain in Portharcourt, and I was told there’s nothing they can do about it. The advised me to block my old card and get a new one which I did right there and not up to a month later, same thing happened, I immediately moved what I have left to another bank and stopped putting money in my GTB again, really sad situation
That was exactly what Firstbank did for me.
OTP was sent to me three times, I didn’t bother cos I didn’t initiate it. They still went ahead to withdraw ₦100000 from my account on December 18, 2024.
The following month of January, they still put my account on LIEN of another ₦100000.
I put calls, I messaged, tagged Firstbank on twitter unless I will get the money tomorrow.
Some of the staff of these banks are fraudsters and the system is covering them.
If you understand Nigeria bank very well then you are not a Nigerian
I had the same experience 35k was moved from my Gtb account last year November they moved 270k from my account after new atm
Gtb is not a reliable bank to keep your capital or to keep your business money they’ll thieves and they don’t make any solutions to your complain.
I opened a new savings account with Gtbank and I decided I won’t apply for an ATM card so I may be able to control my need to withdraw from it. Two days later I started receiving calls that the new account has problem and I needed to share my ATM number (which I didn’t request for or have) to resolve the problem. I now wondered, how did those fraudsters get my details within two days if there’s no in-house collusion. Had to abandon the account.
At this point, I think government authorities should look into the case of GTBank. Same issue happened to me Nov/Dec, 2024, I lost about N300,000 to the negligence of the bank, but when I contacted the Zaria branch the bank push the blame on me that I had exposed my card details, assertions they can’t prove. It’s a pity that Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) can no more GUARANTY the safety of our moneys.
People should stop banking with GTB. I t has deteriorated.
To me my sister you better remove you money from there open online bank like opay, moni point, kada. They saver for now then learn crypto for future because all this useless banks are going disappear with time may reward more than what you loose Ameen ya hayyu ya qayyum
It once happens to me at same GTB Murtala Square branch kaduna. I transferred 320k to my daughter account to cover her school fees, house rent and feeding. 3 days later I issues with my car and wanted to borrow 7k from that money to fix the car. The whole money gone. Same day a Muslim women was in the bank with same issues of 1.2m. To cut the story short. She should go to the CBN and complaint on the issue. My money was refunded after just 2 weeks.
That is GT Bank for you o. I got a new ATM card and the following day I travelled out of the country. I was in Thailand when I started receiving debit alert on my accounts. Till today nothing was refunded
I’m of the opinion that the customer should change the sim card attached to the account in addition to other suggested solutions
I am perplexed,I think I have to work towards closing all my account with GT, Bank,if the bank refuses to act,it means it was them doing the widrawals
It will be so because of Yahoo boys that are not in banking industry. They are the ones that give customers account details to their fellows to initiate all this flops. Banks need to be careful of whom they employ as their staff’s.
Report the case to FCCPC (Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission).
I had a transfer issue with this same GTB (this bank is heavily compromised, and are yet to recover – how are the mighty fallen.).
$100 was transferred to mine GT account, but it never reflected in my account. For more 3 months, despite all efforts to recover the funds, GT refused to take responsibility, despite all evidence from the sender’s bank of a successful transfer.
I got to know about FCCPC for the first time , in January, this year. I reported the case to them on their portal, with evidences. In less than one week GT Bank reverted the money back to my sender, who then forwarded it to me. I only received one email from FCCPC after registering my complaint with them in their portal, to acknowledge receipt, and to inform me to wait for further instructions. I was amazed at the speed and efficiency in resolving my complaint. It was indeed the LORD Jesus’ Intervention.
GT Bank has been infiltrated by hackers, perhaps the management is involved (I’m speculating.)
I trusted this bank and boasted of it. indeed, one should never trust in men and flesh. No matter how strong and fresh a thing is now, tomorrow it will become weak and withered; only the word of the LORD Jesus remains strong, true and fresh forever!
