Elizabeth Olufunke, a resident of Lagos State, has recounted her ordeal with Kehinde Ganmayin, a tiler who abandoned the renovation of her late husband’s burial site in Atan Cemetery, Yaba, after receiving payment and materials for the job.

Speaking to FIJ, Olufunke said she paid Ganmayin N20,000 as mobilisation and purchased three cartons of tiles worth N52,000 based on his recommendations. However, months later, the work remains undone, and the tiles have gone missing.

She explained that Ibrahim Yakubu, the manager of Atan Cemetery in Yaba, introduced Ganmayin to her in August 2023 after a cemetery staff member overbilled her when she sought to renovate her husband’s burial site.

Olufunke said Ganmayin gave her a list of materials to purchase, which included three cartons of tiles (60 by 60), two bags of cement and two bags of sand. She paid him N5,000 for sand and purchased the other items on the list herself because they were more expensive at the cemetery.

When she took the items to the cemetery, the manager informed her that, as per custom, she would need to pay a fee because people were discouraged from bringing in their own materials, as the cemetery had its own suppliers.

“He said I would pay N25,000, but I ended up paying N15,000. The three cartons of tiles cost me N52,000. I paid Ganmayin a mobilisation fee of N20,000 and N5,000 for sand. I brought two bags of cement, which cost me N15,100. I also paid him N25,000 for his labour,” Olufunke told FIJ.

Olufunke said Ganmayin had been giving her the runaround despite fulfilling all of his requests. She told FIJ that she called him throughout September, asking for pictures of his progress, but he never provided any updates.

“A staff member at the cemetery went there on my behalf and found that Ganmayin had not done anything on the site. I showed it to the manager, and he was shocked. I went with a member of my late husband’s family to meet with the manager. It was then the manager revealed that Ganmayin had been fired,” she said.

“When I asked about my job, the manager said he would find someone else to do it, but the job hasn’t been done. I also called someone to check on the tiles I brought, but under the manager’s watch, the three cartons of tiles disappeared. I called the manager to find out what happened, but he never got back to me.”

FIJ contacted Ganmayin on Wednesday for comments, but he was hostile toward the reporter. Initially, he claimed he had been out of Lagos for three months after Olufunke paid him. However, when FIJ reminded him that he still had a month and a half to finish the job, he angrily said, “Get out of my phone.”

When FIJ reached out to the cemetery manager, he told the reporter that he would refund Olufunke for the missing tiles by Tuesday at the latest.
