President Bola Tinubu has been named one of the five 2024 finalists for Persons of the Year in Organised Crime and Corruption.
The Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) published the 2024 Corrupt Person of the Year list on Monday.
After counting the 55,000 nominations which came in from voters, President Tinubu received the third-highest number of votes and ended up on the list of finalists. William Ruto, the president of Kenya, had more votes than any other 2024 nominee, closely followed by Joko Widodo, the ex-president of Indonesia.

“We asked for nominations from readers, journalists, the Person of the Year judges and others in the OCCRP global network,” stated the OCCRP.
“The finalists who received the most votes this year were: President of Kenya William Ruto; Former President of Indonesia Joko Widodo; President of Nigeria Bola Ahmed Tinubu; Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina; Indian businessman Gautam Adani.”

Tinubu’s source of wealth was a big question mark that received no sufficient answer during his campaign as presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2023.
He has been repeatedly linked to drug trafficking crimes, forgery and financial malpractice.
In May 2023, corporate documents revealed that Seyi Tinubu, Tinubu’s son, was the owner of a $10.8 million London mansion which was to be confiscated by the Nigerian government in 2017.
The property was reported to be owned by Kolawole Aluko who acquired it from crime proceeds before Seyi became the owner in 2017.
Besides this property, some other properties in the United Kingdom have been linked to the President and his family.

Since his emergence as Nigeria’s president, Tinubu’s administration has been marred by complaints, protests and controversies in response to what was termed “anti-people” policies.
The year 2024 witnessed a series of demonstrations against hunger, poverty, high cost of living and bad governance, with the most intense being the August 1 to 10 #EndBadGovernance nationwide protest.
Several of these protesters were arrested, detained for months and arraigned for treason, among other charges. More than 20 children were among the detained protesters.

It took the outcry in the media as well as social platforms before the children, who were shown in video clips in poor physical condition, regained freedom.
FIJ earlier reported how Nigeria experienced a free fall in critical areas such as the economy, security, leadership, employment rate and human rights protection in 2024.
