President Bola Tinubu has directed the immediate release of the minors currently on trial for their participation in the #EndBadGovernance protest in August.
Bayo Onanuga, the adviser to the president on information and strategy, disclosed this in a two-paragraphed post on X on Monday.
“President Bola Tinubu has directed the Attorney General of the Federation to do everything possible to ensure the immediate release of minors detained by the Nigeria Police in connection with the recent protests without prejudice to whatever legal processes are ongoing,” Onanuga wrote.

“The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs has also been directed to ensure the safe return of all the minors to their families while an investigation has been opened into the circumstances leading to their prolonged detention.”
As Onanuga did not mention whether the directive meant that the charges against the minors would be dropped, it remains to be seen what becomes of them in the coming days.
On Friday, FIJ shared a video of some of the malnourished underaged children the Nigeria Police Force arraigned before Justice Obiora Egwuatu of the FCT Federal High Court. The minors were on trial for allegedly trying to overthrow President Tinubu during the protest.
Justice Egwuatu imposed a bail condition of N10 million and two sureties on each of the 76 suspects arraigned, including the minors, attracting widespread criticism.
