Omolola Famuyiwa, a Nigerian-American woman, has been evicted from her apartment at 455 Grandview Avenue, Eaglewood City, Bergen County, United States.
According to Famuyiwa, the house which has an adjoining unit with a separate address, 457 Grandview Avenue, was owned by her husband who died in February 2016.

The couple was billed two taxes on the property, and it was treated as two different units. On September 1, when the tenant occupying the adjoining unit received an ejection notice. Famuyiwa did not feel concerned because the notice was not served on her. But officers from the Bergan County Sheriff’s Office would arrive at the widow’s apartment on September 30 to evict her.
“I told them to look at the document very well; that the address was not my own unit,” she told FIJ. “They didn’t listen.”
According to Famuyiwa, the officers, not interested in her explanation, dragged her out.

“I was injured in the process,” she told FIJ. “I am still in great pain from the assault, and the medication the doctor put me through isn’t helping much. I may need to go for therapy.”
After complaints to the sheriff’s office through a phone call, she was directed to the internal affairs unit.
“I spoke to Officer Ruiz at the internal affairs, and he sent two officers to me last week. The officers asked me questions, but I’ve not heard from them since then.
“A lot of people have confronted me and said, ‘This cannot happen in America’. And I told them, ‘It’s because you are myopic about the level of fraud that goes on here.'”
FIJ made several calls to the Bergan County Sheriff’s Office, but they were not answered. Messages sent to the organisation’s official email address and Twitter handle were not responded to.
