A video of residents scooping fuel from a fallen tanker in Cross River State is circulating on social media.

According to Agba Jalingo, the publisher of CrossRiverWatch, a tanker loaded with fuel was involved in an accident on Wednesday evening at Small Iwuru, Akamkpa local government area of the state.

In a 42-second clip Jalingo shared on his Facebook page at 7:08 pm on Wednesday, residents hold kegs and buckets of various sizes as they rush to the accident scene.

This happened exactly one week after a tanker explosion killed scores in Jigawa State as they scooped leaking fuel. The death toll from that incident had risen to 181 at press time.

“See the number of people daring death and scooping fuel in the face of such massive danger,” wrote Jalingo.

The tanker fell on its side by the roadside, while a crowd of residents gathered to loot the fuel content. The clip captured a man trying to hit the recorder with a bucket as the person recording said, “Make una take time o. Fire.”

Also close to the scene was a Hilux vehicle with the inscription “DRAGON SQUAD”.

FIJ understands that the codename of the anti-cultism and kidnapping unit of the Cross River State Police is Dragon Squad.

Although the video does not exactly show if the Dragon Squad officers were inside the vehicle or outside, trying to stop the activities of the residents, Jalingo wrote on Facebook: “I am also surprised to see the truck of the Dragon Squad of the Police parked closely and nothing was done to stop the scoopers from the imminent danger”.

Before the Cross River incident, at least two fuel tankers had been involved in accidents in different states in October.

In Jigawa, more than 100 people were confirmed dead after a fuel tanker exploded and the fire raged on for nearly four hours in Majiya. The driver was on his way to Yobe State when he lost control of the vehicle.

Along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, another tanker exploded after overturning when the driver fell asleep at the wheel and lost control of the vehicle.
