Tobi Amusan could not hold back tears after winning gold at the 2022 World Athletics Championships that was held in Eugene, Oregon, United States of America.

In a video shared by beIN Sports on Twitter, the emotional athlete tries in vain to maintain an erect posture as Nigeria’s national anthem radiates in the background.

Amusan became the first Nigerian to achieve this feat as she raced to victory in the women’s 100m hurdles in the early hours of Monday, returning in a time of 12.06 seconds (wind assisted).

Before this feat however, Amusan had set a new world record after finishing her race in 12.12 seconds in the semi-finals, smashing America’s Kendra Harrison’s record of 12.20 seconds that was set in July, 2016.

Britany Anderson of Jamaica finished second in 12.23 seconds, while Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico, the reigning Olympic champion, finished third in 12.23 seconds.

“Honestly, I believe in my abilities but I was not expecting a world record at these championships,” Amusan said after the win.

“The goal is always just to execute well and get the win. So the world record is a bonus. I knew I had it in me but I could not believe it when I saw it on the screen after the semis.

“Before the final, I just tried to stay calm and to do my best. I took a deep breath knowing that I have some goal to accomplish and it worked pretty good. I knew it was very fast but not this fast.”

Amusan had gone into the championship as Africa’s fastest woman.
