Headfort Foundation, a prison reform initiative, has detailed how waste pickers Daniel Nuru, Emmanuel Jinadu and Joseph Magaji (not real names), spent four months in Ikoyi Prison, after they were arrested by officers from the Alausa Police Command in Ikeja, Lagos, in December 2021.

In a series of tweets on April 22, the foundation stated that the men were victims of a raid carried out by the policemen during the period.

According to the foundation, the police arrested the three men around 7-Up Bottling Company premises in Oregun, Lagos.

Headfort said the men tried to explain what they do to the policemen, but they would not listen to them.

“They were transferred to the Ikeja SARS on December 24, 2021, before being charged with the offence of ‘Being Disorderly Persons and Breach of Public Peace,'” Headfort tweeted.

“They were arraigned in court in January 2022 and admitted bail.”

The foundation said the magistrate at the Ogba Magistrate Court would later assign the matter to their mobile stand, where the trio finally had an opportunity to meet with one of its lawyers.

After their briefs were taken, the matter would come up for another hearing in April.

“On April 14, our lawyer proved to the court that the prosecution was not diligent in prosecuting the matter, and the court ordered their release from custody. They spent four months in custody for no just cause,” the foundation wrote.

“Daniel is from Kogi State, Emmanuel is from Ebonyi State, and Joseph is from Plateau State. These young men came to Lagos State in different years to improve their means of livelihood and they are into recycled products of used cartons as nylons.”
