Mark Eka Ali, a Gombe State-based businessman, has accused Fidelity Bank and Unity Bank of refusing to refund his N10,000 after a dispense error on July 20.

Ali told FIJ that he was at a Unity Bank branch in the Billiri Local Government Area of Gombe State to withdraw some cash when the machine went off.

“I did an ATM transaction of N10,000 on the 20th of July 2022 at the Unity Bank ATM in Billiri LGA, Gombe State, with my Fidelity Bank card, and in the process of the transaction, the ATM machine went off due to low battery,” he said.

“My card was trapped in the machine and I was debited for the dispense error. I called the attention of the security men on duty and they asked me to approach the bank the following morning to collect my trapped card, which I did. I waited for the reversal but never got any.”

Ali said he visited Unity Bank to file a complaint but was told to approach Fidelity Bank instead.

“I was directed by Unity Bank to report the issue to my bank, Fidelity Bank, and I did that. Fidelity Bank then referred me back to Unity Bank for the footprint of the said transaction,” Ali said.

“Unity bank said the complaint must be made through Fidelity Bank, which I did on the 6th of August.

“I have been calling both banks since then without any positive response. Both banks have not been helping matters at all for nearly a month.”

FIJ made a call to Unity Bank, but they requested for an email. Several phone calls to Fidelity Bank were not answered, and at press time, emails sent to the two banks had not been responded to.
