A yet-to-be-identified police officer has been caught on camera assaulting Kayode Babayomi, the Oyo State chairman of the African Action Congress (AAC).

The officer was caught in the act during the state’s local government election on Saturday.

FIJ saw clips of Babayomi in handcuffs, detained in a van.

In one of the videos, the police officer, identified by Babayomi as a divisional police officer (DPO), physically hit the AAC man.

“This man has bullied me. He calls himself a DPO. So, because you are a DPO, I can’t talk to you? I was even embracing the other police officer who was coming towards me. Suddenly, this man just bundled me,” Babayomi was heard saying in the video.

The accused police officer was giving his account of the events that led to the arrest when he stopped to hit a cuffed Babayomi in the van.

Festus Ogun, a human rights lawyer, has already threatened to sue if Babayomi is not released.

“AAC Opposition leader in Oyo arrested by the Police for simply insisting on a free, fair and credible local government election. This strategic intimidation is unacceptable. The Police must release [Babayomi] immediately and unconditionally. We will meet in court,” Ogun posted on X.

Seyi Makinde, the Oyo State Governor, announced that he cast his vote in Unit 1, Ward 011, Abayomi, Iwo Road, Ibadan North East LGA, on Saturday afternoon.

Several complaints appeared as responses to the governor’s post, but had not responded at press time.
