04.09.2022 Featured 6 Persons Trapped as Seven-Storeyed Building Collapses in Lagos

A seven-storey building collapsed around Sand Field bus stop in the Lekki area of Lagos on Sunday, and the authorities said that no less than six people were trapped under the rubble.

First responders and emergency officials are at the site of the collapse, but they need heavy duty equipment to rescue the victims.

Ibrahim Farinloye, the Lagos Territorial Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), confirmed the building collapse on Sunday.

“Seven-storey building collapsed at Sand field bus stop, Lekki. Six people are said to be trapped and responders on ground,” Farinloye said.

Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, said that the agency discovered that the seven-storey building was under construction when it collapsed.

“No injury sustained. However, about six people are reported to be trapped under the rubble of the collapsed structure,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.

“The agency’s heavy duty equipment excavator will be required for the rescue of the trapped victims. We have activated Lagos State Response plan. The operation is ongoing. More updates to follow.”

A 21-storey building collapsed on No 44, Gerard Road, Ikoyi, Lagos, killing scores of people on November 1. On Tuesday, a coroner revealed that the building collapsed because of the negligence of the agencies responsible for approval and supervision of the building project.
