The National Assembly has finally passed the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.

The bill was passed after Kabiru Gaya, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), presented a report at a plenary session.

The debate on the transmission of election results electronically has been the bone of contention among the senators.

The senate had blocked the transmission of election results through electronic means in clause 50 (2) of the bill.

FIJ had reported how the senate restored the electronic transmission of results, and the provision granting INEC powers to review results declared under duress in the Electoral Bill.

On Thursday, during the plenary, Sabi Abdullahi, the Deputy Senate Whip, proposed that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) ensure that the national coverage is adequate while the Senate approves before INEC can transmit election results.

After a rowdy session and using a “division” voting method, the senate eventually retained Abdullahi’s amendment after a 52-28 vote.
