A vehicle of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) was caught on camera driving against traffic in Ikeja, the state capital, on Saturday.

FIJ gathered in a 12-second video that the patrol vehicle of the anti-one-way agency was stuck in a bus lane trying to ease its way out of traffic.

The LASTMA Vehicle Stuck Driving Against Traffic

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority Law prohibits driving vehicles in a direction other than the specified one.

It states as follows:

“1. (1) Without prejudice to the provisions of Section 11 of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority Law, the Authority’s control and management of vehicular traffic in the State, shall include the;

“(a) Prohibition or restriction of the use of any specified highway by vehicles of specified class or description;

“(b) Prohibition of driving or propelling of vehicles on any specified highway otherwise than in a specified direction.”

The same law states that driving in the wrong bus lane is punishable.

“24. Any person who- (a) Drives or causes his vehicle to be driven along the Bus Transit, Sirens, etc. Rapid Transit (BRT) lane, shall be guilty of an offense according to the state law.”

In September, 134 vehicles were put up for auction by the Lagos State Government for varying traffic offenses, and driving against traffic was prominent among the crimes.

FIJ’s efforts to reach LASTMA through the official lines on their website proved abortive, as the lines were unreachable.
