The whereabouts of 14-year-old Ngozi Offor (not real name) raped for four years by her guardian has remained unknown since she was handed over to the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team (DSVRT) sometime in March.

Ngozi was taken to the DSVRT by her neighbour Rita Adam after she dropped a note threatening suicide at another neighbour’s house, but she has not been seen by any of her relatives or Rita since then.

Ngozi moved in with Peter Ezeka, the alleged rapist, in 2017 shortly after the death of her father. In his house in the Isolo area of Lagos, she cared for Ezeka’s sons, helped his wife, and, under duress, nursed Ezeka’s sexual needs.

In a conversation with FIJ on Monday, Ngozi’s mother said she had not the slightest idea of her daughter’s whereabouts since she got to DSVRT. Emeka Okoye, Nogozi’s uncle, also said the same thing when reached on Tuesday.

Prior to an earlier report on the case, FIJ had spoken with DSVRT in an attempt to know Ngozi’s whereabouts, but the team’s representatives claimed their investigation was ongoing.

Oni, the DSVRT officer in charge of the case, claimed the rape victim had been taken to an orphanage but refused to give the name and address. Oni, who had earlier cut every line of connection between her and Rita, subsequently blocked FIJ’s phone number.

The refusal of DSVRT to give tangible information to any of the relatives adds weight to Rita’s suspicions of an ongoing cover-up. She had told FIJ that Ezeka had paid everyone connected to the case off.
