Two F-16 jets escorted Poland’s national football team to Qatar for the 2022 World Cup after a missile strike killed two Polish citizens.

On its official Twitter handle on Thursday, the team, popularly called the White and Red, thanked pilots of the fighter jets for keeping every member safe.

“We were escorted to the southern border of Poland by F16 planes!” The tweet reads.

“Thank you and greetings to the pilots!”

The escort mission was deemed necessary after a missile strike killed two local farm workers in Przewodówon, a village near Poland’s southeastern border with Ukraine, on Tuesday.

After the incident, US officials suggested that the bomb was fired by Ukraine’s air defence system while trying to repel a missile attack from Russia.

“Our preliminary analysis suggests that the incident was likely caused by the Ukrainian air defence missile fired to defend Ukrainian territory against Russian cruise missile attacks,” said Jens Stoltenberg, NATO’s General Secretary.

“But let me be clear; this is not Ukraine’s fault. Russia bears ultimate responsibility, as it continues its illegal war against Ukraine.”

However, Ukraine later denied being responsible for the attack.
