Opeyemi Idiat Oshonubi, an Ogun State-based POS Operator, has detailed how N35,400 got stuck between Opay and First City Monument Bank (FCMB) after a customer visited her stand to carry out a transaction.

Oshonubi told FIJ that the incident happened on Tuesday after the customer, a man travelling through Ijebu-Ode, needed to make a cash withdrawal in order to purchase a new battery for his car.

“The customer was a trader based in the southeast. He was returning to his base when his car developed a fault,” Oshonubi told FIJ.

“After the car was checked by a mechanic, the customer was advised to purchase a new battery. That was when he came to my stand to make the withdrawal.

“When he tried making the withdrawal, the money got debited from his account but he did not receive value.”

Oshonubi said she immediately contacted Opay, the owner of the POS terminal that was used, to lodge a complaint on the client’s behalf.

“The shocking aspect is that, when I contacted Opay, I was told that the debited sum was not in their care. They also said I should advise the customer to liaise with FCMB as they were sure the money was with them,” said Oshonubi.

“When the customer got to FCMB however, he was told to go back to Opay.

“Presently, the customer is highly agitated and I’m the one constantly receiving ‘the heat’ from him. Both institutions should just stop tossing us about and refund the customer’s money.”

FIJ sent mails to FCMB and Opay on Friday, but they had not responded at press time.
