Policemen attached to the Ajiwe police division, Lagos State, on Sunday morning, shot and killed 41-year-old Bolanle Raheem, a lawyer.

Kelechukwu Uzoka, another lawyer, told FIJ that Raheem was returning from a church service with her family when the officers asked that her husband park the car.

He said while his colleague was making efforts to park away from under the Ajah bridge, a policeman cocked his gun and shot her.

Speaking to FIJ, he said, “The sister could not park there, so he drove further to park away from the spot, but the police officer cocked his gun and shot through the vehicle. The bullet pierced the car and went straight to her heart. Her children were in the vehicle.”

Benjamin Hundeyin, spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command, in a wireless message sighted by FIJ, confirmed the incident, saying one Dranbi Vandi, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), and two others, had been detained following the incident.

His message read, “Today, being 25/12/2022, at about 1310hrs, one Enema Titilayo of Ipinyewa phase 2 Ikorodu Adamo, Lagos, reported that on the same date at about 11:30hrs, she and her sister, one Barrister Bolanle Raheem ‘f’ aged 41 years, and four children, were coming from Domino Pizza, Ajah, and were trying to make a U-turn at Ajah under bridge when policemen on duty tried to stop them and in the process, shot at their vehicle, a silver Toyota Venza with registration number JTS0861.

“She stated further that her sister named Barrister Raheem was hit by a bullet and she was rushed to Granville Medical Centre, Ajah, for treatment, where she later died.

“The DPO led a team of policemen to the scene. Photographs were taken, and corpse removed and deposited at Mainland General hospital mortuary, Yaba, Lagos, for autopsy.

“Meanwhile, ASP Drambi Vandi and two others have been detained. The matter will be transferred to SCID Panti, Yaba, for discrete investigation.”

Ikechukwu Uwmma, chairman, Lagos branch of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), in a statement, said the NBA was following the matter and would ensure justice was served.
