Strange phone numbers have since Friday been calling James Karunwi, a forex trader whom policemen extorted N2 million from in Ilorin, Kwara State.

Karunwi, on Friday, narrated his ordeal to FIJ, but moments after FIJ called Okasanmi Ajayi, spokesman for the Kwara State Police Command, to ask for his position on the matter, two policemen called the victim and asked to see him.

“One number called me on Friday night, and said he wanted to see me,” Karunwi told FIJ on Saturday. “He said his sister told him about the extortion and he wanted me to come.

“I told him I had already tabled the matter with the PPRO, but he asked that I show up.”

Karunwi said after the first call, another man called about the same matter.

“A man called and said we should come and see him,” Karunwi narrated. “I told him I didn’t know who he was or why I should come and see him, but he kept saying I should come for talks.”

FIJ, on Saturday, reported how policemen attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Ilorin, extorted N2 million from Karunwi and his friends.

After the report, Ajayi invited Karunwi to the SCID, where the victim saw and identified some of the policemen who extorted the money from him, but Ajayi asked that he write a petition and return to the department on Monday.

Karunwi, however, told FIJ that the strange calls did not stop. He said on Sunday, a man claiming to be an alhaji with no ties to the police called his friend and asked that they come to the SCID immediately to see him.

“The number called, and the man was saying we should come to the SCID now now,” Karunwi said. “We told him we were not in the vicinity and had an appointment with the PPRO.

“He kept insisting in his native Yoruba, asking us to come, but we will only go to the PPRO.”

FIJ sent the numbers to Ajayi, who said the victim would be protected, and that he would get his money back.
