Emeka Williams (real name withheld), an engineer and volunteer caregiver in Port Harcourt, has accused Medilives Global Health Care UK, a healthcare recruitment agency, of withholding his £1000.
While speaking with FIJ, Williams said he contacted Medilives UK in February 2022 via WhatsApp when he learnt that the agency could help him get a caregiver’s job in the UK.
His interaction with the agency revealed that the recruitment process, including one month’s training, flights, accommodation and visa procurement, would cost him £5000.
“The company said I could pay in instalments. Also, I was to either pay £2000 to participate in the training online or £3000 to attend the training in the UK.
“At the end of the training, I received a certificate of completion. Meanwhile, I was to pay the balance once I secured a job in the UK,” Williams added while speaking with FIJ.
According to the Port Harcourt-based engineer, the extra £1000 was to cover his flight tickets, accommodation and visit visa.
Williams said he could not make it to the UK for the training because his visa application was not successful.
He then had to attend the one-month training, from July 6 to August 10, via Zoom.
NO VISA, NO REFUND
Medilives UK promised to return part of the £1000 for flight tickets and accommodation if the visa application was denied, but the agency has not refunded Williams.
He told FIJ that the agency had gone mute since he sent the supporting documents to aid his request for a refund on December 14, 2022.
“Medilives UK asked me to send the visa refusal letter and proof of payment, but I have not heard from them.
“They have stopped responding to me on WhatsApp as well. I am not even fighting for a full refund; I just want them to refund the promised part-payment,” said Williams.
Messages sent to the agency via email and WhatsApp had not been responded to at press time.
