The Indonesian government says it has opened an investigation into the manhandling of Mohammed Buba, a Nigerian accredited diplomat by its immigration officers.

Nigeria had threatened to review its relationship with Indonesia after a viral of video Buba’s maltreatment surfaced online earlier, prompting outrage of Nigerians.

In the video, Buba could be heard grunting and screaming: “I can’t breathe. My neck! My neck! My neck! My neck!”. His groans were a reaction to being pinned down in the vehicle by a number of Indonesian immigration officials.

After the video went viral, Geoffrey Onyeama, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, summoned Usra Harahap, the Indonesian Ambassador to Nigeria over the matter.

However, Teuku Faizasyah, Indonesian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, on Thursday tendered a formal apology to Nigeria over the issue, insisting that it was an isolated case.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs regrets the incident on August 7th,” Faizasyah said.

“This is an isolated incident, and is in no way related to the commitment of the Indonesian government to carrying out its obligations as host country or in accordance with the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations.”

Faizasyah added that Indonesia had launched a formal investigation into the incident.
