The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has stated that it will sue Ministries, Departments and Agencies of the Federal Government over non-remittance of N4.97trillion into the federation account in 2019.

In a tweet on Thursday, SERAP said its decision to sue the MDAs is to “ensure that suspected perpetrators are brought to justice, and missing public funds are fully recovered”.

This is coming on the heels of a statement made by Adolphus Aghughu, Auditor-General of the Federation, while submitting the 2019 audit report to the National Assembly on Wednesday.

Aghughu said that “unsubstantiated balances amounting to N4.97tn were observed” from the “audit carried out on the 2019 Federal Government Consolidated Financial Statement”.

Aghughu also said that his office had been crippled by some factors which gave room for financial infractions in the MDAs.

However, Aghughu, in what looked like a turnback on Thursday, said no money was missing in the federation account and that the ‘unsubstantiated balances of N4.97trillion’ statement was “made as one of the bases for ‘qualified opinion’”.

“The qualified opinion notwithstanding, the Federal Government of Nigeria Consolidated Financial Statements for the year ended on December 31, 2019, was true and fair,” he said.
