Seun Ayenogun, an Ogun State-based solar technician, has accused Carbon, a digital bank, of pestering him with messages to repay a strange loan.

Ayenogun told FIJ that although he opened an account with Carbon in February 2022, he had never asked for a loan on the platform. But he received a shocking email on September 19, 2022, from one Aisha.

According to the email, which screenshot was obtained by FIJ, Ayenogun must pay an outstanding loan of N2,415 to a Carbon collections account before the end of September.

The solar technician said he then contacted Carbon via WhatsApp to make enquiries about the alleged loan but did not receive any response.

“In the WhatsApp message, I asked to know the exact date and time the said loan was taken and the account details of the receiver. I wanted to know if it was used to buy airtime, so that I could ask them to provide the mobile number,” said Ayenogun.

He has been receiving weekly text messages and occasional emails from Carbon since then, with threats that he has been reported to the credit bureaus and will be taken to court.

One of the text messages reads, “SEUN, you have been reported to the credit bureaus and you will be taken to court. Pay N2,415 instead of N3,450 into Carbon account: 9705629813 NOW”.

When FIJ tried to verify the Carbon account, the beneficiary name was ‘Carbon Collections Carbon Collections’.

“I never borrowed a dime from them, but they keep messaging me,” said Ayenogun. “I received another email on January 30, 2023. It seems that one Precious Obiefule borrowed the sum in my name.

“They asked me to use one Client ID 411479630 and full name Precious Obiefule as transaction narration. How can I pay something I know nothing about?

“The sad thing about this whole issue is that I don’t even remember my login,” said Ayenogun.

He has reached out several times to the organisation via WhatsApp but no one has responded to him. Yet the harassment has not stopped.

When contacted for comments, Carbon told FIJ that the company could not provide any information as doing so was against its data protection policies.

“However, we will reach out to the customer concerned and clarify,” Carbon said.
