Sunday Abayomi, a Lagos-based pensioner, has narrated how Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) blacklisted his account without giving a reason.

Speaking with FIJ, Abayomi stated that his ordeal began when one Oluwaniran Oluwabunmi mistakenly sent N101,000 to his account on March 9.

“On March 9, Oluwaniran, whom I don’t know from anywhere, mistakenly sent money to me from a Keystone account,” he told FIJ.

“Immediately she realised her mistake, she went to her bank in Ado-Ekiti, where I suspect she got my details, because she called to inform me about the transaction.”

Receipt of the refund made by the retiree, Abayomi.

The retiree, although immediately refunded the money, soon learned of a restriction on his account.

“I didn’t waste a minute before sending the money back to her Keystone account, and she acknowledged receiving it. What she didn’t do was return to her bank to say I had refunded her.

“I also didn’t realise my account had been blocked until I tried to make some transactions.”

Abayomi said no one could explain the restriction on his account despite his visits to the bank until he called the GTB customer care one night.

“I visited the Alausa branch of the bank on March 24 and other times, but the issue has remained the same. Each time I go, I meet the head of operations, who only promises to send an email to the headquarters,” he told FIJ.

“One night, I called the customer care line, and they told me my account had been restricted from making transactions for some reasons.

“I have also logged formal complaints online, but they have been futile.”

When FIJ sent an email to Cornelius Onuoha, a public relations officer of the bank, on Monday, he asked that our reporter provide Abayomi’s account details. He didn’t respond afterwards.

“I acknowledge receipt of your mail. Kindly furnish us with the complainant’s account details,” he wrote.
