New photos of supposedly flooded Adamasingba Stadium, Ibadan, Oyo State, making the rounds on the social media, are false, FIJ can report.

Following the observation of a leaking roof and water patches on the football field during a match marking the reopening of the stadium after N5.58billion remodeling by the Seyi Makinde-led state government on Wednesday, several photos of a flooded stadium were shared to show subsequent states of the facility.

Indeed, the pitch was waterlogged and FIJ obtained a video of a part of the stands that were leaking.

However, in one of the the new photos in circulation, obtained by FIJ, a pitch is submerged, while several rows of a stand are flooded in another. FIJ’s independent investigations revealed that the facility in the photos was the Sheffield Wednesday Stadium, Hillsborough, United Kingdom, during a heavy rain on Tuesday, June 26, 2007.

River Don, which flows past the stadium, burst its banks, causing water to stream in. The water was high enough to cover the main stand of the stadium and leave it without electricity and telephone lines.

On Thursday, FIJ had reported how rain exposed the poor work at the newly commissioned Adamasingba Stadium. Videos recorded at the facility showed a leaking roof through which water crept in and flooded some of the stadium’s stands, preventing spectators from occupying them.

In August 2020, Governor Makinde had revealed that his government signed a contractual agreement with Messrs Peculiar Ultimate Concerns Limited for the remodeling of the 30-year-old stadium at a cost of over N5.58billion.

During a tour of the stadium a day to the commissioning, Ademola Ige, the Special Adviser to Governor Makinde on Culture and Tourism, also said the facility would make Oyo State a “tourists’ designation”.
