The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in the wake of the March 18 gubernatorial election, declared the Kebbi State governorship election inconclusive.

The electoral commission cited over-voting, in that there were more votes than registered voters at some polling units in the state.

Alongside Adamawa and Sokoto, INEC scheduled the supplementary elections for April 15, three weeks after the original date of the gubernatorial election.

A resident of Birnin Kebbi, the state capital of Kebbi, told FIJ that although the election was being held at only three polling units in Birnin Kebbi, voter apathy was evident.

“The supplementary election is unlike the gubernatorial election, when everyone was out,” she said.

“A lot of people who are first-time voters like me lost enthusiasm in the elections after it turned out the way it did. It is just business as usual and everyone is on the streets doing their thing.”

Another source told FIJ that in Hisbah, Birnin Kebbi Polling Unit 003, only 440 voters out of the 750 registered voters were present.

“There were more people during the last election than today. A lot of people were discouraged about the outcome of the March 18 election and it made them stay away from the polls,” he told FIJ.

“One of the reasons I was at the poll today was because I am angry about the outcome of the last elections. If we must have a good government, we must be persistent enough to vote our choice. We want a good Kebbi.”

The source further stated that the March 18 election was cancelled because the All Progressive Congress (APC) largely rigged at most of the polling units.

“Dr. Nasir Idris, candidate of the APC, won the initial gubernatorial election in the state, but everyone knows he rigged his way to victory.

“The election had to be cancelled because he wasn’t the people’s choice. The electorate wanted Aminu Bande, candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

“We are hopeful that our choice candidate will win this time, although Idris won our polling unit with 348 votes against Bande’s 111.”
