Doris Akunna, a Lagos resident, has told FIJ how she has had to wait indefinitely for Guaranty Trust Bank (GT Bank) to return the money she lost in failed transactions.

According to Akunna, GT Bank initially promised to resolve the failed transactions in a couple of working days, and the bank’s staff members renewed the promise after failing to refund Akunna’s money twice.

They later told Akunna that the bank was investigating how the money vanished from her bank account, but there was no mention of a resolution timeframe.

“I bought fuel of N20,000 from a filling station in the first transaction on March 22. When I used the PoS, the thing declined, but I was debited. I had to use another bank card to pay again,” Akunna told FIJ on Tuesday.

“I went to the bank to complain, and they told me to come back three days later. The bank told me to wait for another eight days. So, I went back to the bank and they promised to send my N20,000 back to me on April 13. After then, I went back, and they told me that they would refund me on the 31st of April. Till now, I haven’t seen my money. I was even at the bank last week Wednesday. I went there and they told me the same thing.

“I went to the branch in Amuwo Odofin, the one close to Apple Junction. I also visited another at First Gate in FESTAC.

Akunna told FIJ that she lost her N20,000 for the fuel on March 22 and lost an extra N13,000 on April 20.

“After the N20,000 debit, the bank debited another N13,000 in another unsuccessful transaction. I bought some things in the market on the 20th of April and I wanted to pay through PoS, but the transaction was declined. My bank went ahead to debit my account for the declined transaction,” Akunna said.

“The bank told me that the money left my account and they had to investigate the matter. This investigation was supposed to take 3 days. I’ve gone to my bank over five times and they’ve continued to say the same thing: we will escalate the matter.”

FIJ sent an inquiry to GT Bank on Tuesday but the bank had not responded at press time.
