Solomon Akuma, a pharmacist based in Abia State, has spent 17 months in jail since he jokingly tweeted about paying a Russian sniper to eliminate President Muhammadu Buhari and Abba Kyari, the president’s late chief of staff, in April 2020.

The tweet was in response to a post by Tunde Omotoye, a Canada-based Nigerian, asking what people would do with $1 million.

“Pay a Russian sniper to eliminate Buhari and Abba Kyari,” Akuma had responded.

After his arrest, Solomon was arraigned in the Federal High Court, Abuja, with charges of terrorism, sedition, criminal intimidation and threat to the president’s life. Several applications to secure his bail were denied.

On Monday, September 27, following his appearance in court, the case was adjourned until November 22, 2021, adding another four weeks to his time in detention.

“The police have done their investigations and seen he doesn’t have the capability to carry out the threat,” tweeted one of Akuma’s friends who simply identified as Shola. “But this is an insane country where oppression has been normalised.”

On March 25, 2021, Bashir Ahmad, the Personal Assistant on New Media to President Buhari, tweeted that Akuma had said he would pay an assassin to kill the president and his late chief of staff.

“We all ought to know there is a price for that,” Ahmad said.
