Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, former Emir of Kano and Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, has accused members of the National Assembly of “shamelessly announcing that they want to rig” elections.

He said this on Friday during an Arise News ’61 Years of Nationhood’ programme observed by FIJ.

While responding to a question on calls for a southerner to become president in 2023, Sanusi said there were more important issues to address than the tribe of the next president.

He referred to the clause in the electoral act amendment bill, which bars the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from transmitting election results electronically, as agreed to by both the legislature.

Sanusi said, “We have simple issues like electronic transmission of election results, to make the results fairer and clearer, but people in the National assembly are saying they don’t want it, shamelessly announcing that they want to rig.

“This electronic transmission was passed by a Senate committee. The members of this committee came to the floor of the Senate to reject their own submission.

“Meanwhile, every party does electronic transmission; ask them. They have situation rooms, yet they’re saying INEC cannot do it.”

The provision contained in Section 50 (2) of the bill was modified by the leadership of both chambers in the approved version to read: “Voting in an election under this Bill shall be in accordance with the procedure determined by the Commission, which may include electronic voting, PROVIDED that the Commission shall not transmit results of elections by electronic means.”
