Popular social media platforms Whatsapp, Facebook and Twitter have gone offline, shutting out billions of users globally as speculation of technical failure dominate online conversations.

The three platforms, owned by Mark Zuckerberg, an American billonaire, have failed to refresh updates or send messages since about 4:40pm Nigerian time on Monday.

Reacting to the downtime, Whatsapp put out a tweet promising to resolve the matter “as soon as possible”.

“We’re aware that some people are experiencing issues with Whatsapp at the moment,” it tweeted. “We are working to get things back to normal and we will send an update here as soon as possible.”

Facebook and Instagram also reacted similarly.

The situation has attracted 3.15 million tweets, with Whatsapp trending in first place on Nigerian Twitter.

According to Statista, Facebook boasts 2.8 billion users, Instagram boasts 1.3 billion while Whatsapp has a staggering 2 billion people on its platform.
