The Appeal Court in Abuja has upheld the sack of Abba Kabir Yusuf, the Governor of Kano State and candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).

The court, on Friday, adjudged that Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), is the rightful winner of the election.

Yusuf had been sacked from his seat as governor on September 20 by a three-man panel of judges led by Justice Oluyemi Akintan Osadebay, who stated that 165,663 of his votes were invalid because they were not signed or stamped by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Abdul Fagge, APC’s legal representative, said the electoral commission violated the provisions of the 2022 Electoral Act by declaring a winner of the governorship election because the votes cancelled by INEC, by far, outnumbered the margin of lead between the winner and runner-up.

Yusuf was declared the winner of the March 18 gubernatorial election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after polling a total of 1,019,602 votes to defeat Gawuna with 890,705 votes.
