On Sunday, the life of Chioma Mbionu, a 20-year-old Medical Rehabilitation student at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Anambra State, came to a brutal end after armed men shot at her.

The 300 level student of the school in Okofia, Nnewi, was on her way to a fellowship service beside the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) when heavy gunshots shook the community.

On Sunday, FIJ reported how unidentified gunmen killed two and razed offices of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), as well as the residence of Joe Igbokwe, a communication strategist for the All Progressives Congress (APC) and aide to the Lagos State Governor.

An eyewitness told FIJ that the gunmen were pursuing a Hausa man when one of them ran into a shop where Chioma and her friends were shopping.

“She had gone to a church service at a fellowship centre near NAUTH with her friends, and they were in a shop buying some stuff when the gunmen started to shoot, looking for a Hausa man. No one knows what he did to offend them,” she said.

“The man ran into the shop where the girls were hiding, and they (gunmen) started to shoot. That was when she was hit on her thighs. The men demanded for their target, but he had already left the shop from behind. So, they left.”

She added that Chioma was carried from the shop to the teaching hospital but was not attended to as resident doctors were on strike nationwide.

“Chioma was carried to the hospital but was turned back because doctors were on strike, and apparently no one knew a thing about first aid,” she said.

“Her friends couldn’t get anyone to take her to a private hospital too, so after bleeding for two hours, she died.”

Another eye witness told FIJ that the gunmen eventually nabbed the targeted person and drove him away in the vehicle they arrived in.

Ikenganyia Anthony, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Anambra Police Command, told FIJ that the incident was being investigated.
