Morenikeji Fadipe, a senior fire officer at the University of Ibadan (UI), lost his composure after Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) alerted him that his account had been debited N89,000.

Worse still, GTB told him that he was unlikely to recover his money. This was after complaining to the UI branch of the bank that he did not carry out any transaction to warrant the deduction.

“The customer care official I spoke to told me I might not get my money back as it had been transferred to an Opay account. They only gave me the phone number of the Opay account’s owner,” Fadipe said.

When Fadipe contacted the owner of the Opay account, he ended the call and refused to answer subsequent calls.

Recalling what might have caused the problem, Fadipe said he had applied for a GTB loan online on September 20 and entered his ATM details. However, he was turned down by the bank.

When his salary was sent into the account on Monday, he was debited almost immediately.

“In less than five minutes after receiving my salary, GTB debited my account,” he said.

As of press time, GTB had not responded to FIJ’s email.
