The Nigerian Senate has authorised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to determine the mode of transmitting election results. This is contained in the Electoral Act Amendment Bill passed on Tuesday.

According to a report by The Cable, the new amendment gives the electoral commission the power to transmit election results either electronically or manually.

Another clause in the bill mandates all political parties to use direct primary election mode while choosing their candidates.

While presenting the bill before the Senate on Tuesday, Yahaya Abdullahi, Senate Majority Leader, said there was a need to amend the Electoral Act.

“After critical examination of the bill by the Senate committee on INEC, some fundamental issues which require fresh legislative action on the following clauses 43, 52, 63 and 87 were observed,” Abdullahi said.
