Five soldiers have been reported killed on Wednesday while responding to an attack by bandits in Zamfara.

In a Twitter post by Yusuf Anka, who was in the state, the late soldiers were said to have been killed along Gusau-Wanzamai road.

“Nigeria is increasingly loosing young officers to bandits recently,” Anka wrote in his tweet. “The men deserve protected vehicles and more sophistication.”

FIJ gathered that the slain soldiers were responding to a distress call when the armed bandits opened fire on their vehicle, killed them and stole their guns on Wednesday.

Reacting to the death of the officers, Engr Yasir Arafat Jubril, a Twitter user, said SB Umar, one of the soldiers, was a very bright student in school.

“This guy was my senior,” Jubril wrote. “In fact, he got a scholarship to run PhD with PTDF by January 2022.”

Several calls placed to the spokespersons for the Nigerian Army and Zamfara police were not answered. Messages sent to them were also not responded to.
