Two people have died in a Yoruba-Hausa clash that broke out on Thursday night in Ogba, Lagos.

Residents of the area told FIJ the fight broke out after one Abbey was killed while trying to settle a dispute between two people. They said that the argument had got messy, leading to one of the warring parties stabbing the victim in the back.

“We heard that two people were fighting in a place where some Hausa guys sleep. Yesterday, they were having issues and one of the deceased, Abbey, a Yoruba guy, tried to step in,” said one of the sources.

“That was how they stabbed him. The guy who stabbed him was Hausa and he immediately ran away as soon as he saw what he had done.

“The Yoruba people in the community when they saw what happened tried to chase the guys but Abbey had already died.”

He further said that the Yoruba guys said they were going to retaliate and would kill at least four of the Hausa guys in the community.

“This morning, the Yoruba guys started and blocked everywhere. They went after anyone who looked Hausa. They bloodied one of the Hausa guys and took him to the police station.

“In their rage, they also smashed tricycles and beat people up while ordering that they leave the place.

“There was only one casualty from the incident last night, but now everyone is saying another person has been killed.”

To prevent the matter from getting to the internet, street hoodlums ensured no one used their phones, according to a source.

“The agberos didn’t allow anyone to take pictures or videos of the incident. They said they didn’t want it to get to the internet,” the source said.

FIJ can confirm that normalcy has returned to the area. Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, failed to answer his calls when FIJ tried to get his comments. A text message sent to him had not been responded to at press time.
