Bamaiyi Meriga, a forensic analyst, has informed a High Court sitting in Abuja that Godwin Emefiele, the immediate past Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, forged the documents that were used to facilitate $6.2 million meant for election coverage by foreign observers.

A source who witnessed the proceedings on Thursday told FIJ that the expert made it known to the court that the signatures on the documents neither belonged to former President Muhammadu Buhari nor Boss Mustapha, the then Secretary General of the Federation (SGF).

Meriga also confirmed that the seal of execution the documents carried was different from the original seals used by the government.

The documents under review, numbering two, were later admitted as evidence by Justice Hamza Muazu, the presiding judge.

Emefiele is being tried on 20 counts that include forgery, criminal breach of trust, corrupt advantages, criminal conspiracy and obtaining $6.2 million by false pretence.

On February 13, Mustapha, while testifying before the court, claimed the sum was released from the CBN in February 2023 using a forged document. The former SGF also said that he was sure the documents were not issued by his office.

The hearing is expected to continue on March 11.
