Three residents of Tangur 1 village in the Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State were killed on Monday night in a violent attack allegedly carried out by Fulani herdsmen.

According to a Bokkos resident who spoke with FIJ, the armed men launched their attack on the villagers around 9:30 pm but were eventually repelled by the military.

The resident reported that before the arrival of Nigerian Army troops, the attackers succeeded in killing a man, a young boy and a pregnant woman.

“As they fled towards Wumat in Bokkos, they claimed the life of another pregnant woman. I alerted the army about the initial attack on my people, but before they showed up, there were already casualties,” the source told FIJ.

The source further said that in a separate incident around 1 am on Tuesday, some attackers killed four men who were acting as vigilantes in Butura Gida village, Bokkos LGA.

“Whether it was the same group of attackers as those in Tangur or not, I cannot say. However, some individuals went to Butura Gida and murdered four men who were serving as vigilantes for their community. No houses were set ablaze in the targeted communities, and Tangur residents laid their deceased to rest today,” the source added.

When FIJ called Alfred Alabo, Plateau State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), for comments on the matter, he said he could not talk to this reporter because he did not know him.

Once known as the Home of Peace and Tourism, Plateau State has become a ground of recurrent violence. In January, 23 people lost their lives to terrorist attacks, and some others died in February and March.

In December, armed Fulani herders brought the apocalypse to Bokkos and Barkin LGA in an attack that led to the deaths of over 160 people.
