05.12.2021 news Sylvester Oromoni’s Father Vows Not to Bury Him Until Justice is Served

Sylvester Oromoni Snr., father of late Sylvester Oromoni Jnr., the 12-year-old who died after experiencing serious pain from injuries allegedly inflicted upon him by a cult group at Dowen College, Lekki, Lagos, has sworn not to bury his son until justice prevails.

Oromoni said this in an interview with The Punch on Saturday, shortly after the family celebrated their son’s first posthumous birthday.

“How can he be buried?” Oromoni asked. “I cannot bury him until I get justice; until I get to the end of the matter. Even if it takes two or three years, we would be going on. I pray God to keep us alive.”

Oromoni said the design of the cake used in celebrating his late son’s posthumous birthday after a pilot’s uniform and an airplane was in memory of his ambition to be a pilot.

Expressing sadness over the death of the teenager, Ifeanyi Okowo, Delta State Governor, had said, “We are determined to pursue this case to the end. The matter must be investigated, [and] perpetrators [must] be apprehended and punished to serve as a very strong deterrent against future occurrences.”

Sylvester’s death stirred controversies on Wednesday, after a social media post by his cousin, Perry Oromoni, alleging that he was beaten up in hostel at Dowen College by older students of the institution for refusing to join a cult.

The school, however, refuted the allegation, claiming that the youngster complained of leg and hip discomfort as a result of an injury sustained while playing football.

Nigerians different social media platforms criticised Dowen College following Sylvester’s death and sought justice for the diceased.

The Lagos State Government, through the Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo, also ordered the indefinite closure of Dowen College till the conclusion of an inquiry into Sylvester’s murder.
