Students of Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) have expressed fears following the killing of two farmers by suspected herdsmen in Ikole-Ekiti, a community hosting one of the institution’s campuses in the state.

The farmers were reportedly shot dead on their farm on Friday. Sunday Abutu, police spokesperson in the state, had said the clash was preceded by a disagreement between farmers and herders.

The incident had created tension in the community, leading to a protest by residents.

Kayode Fayemi, the Governor of Ekiti State, described the killing as one too many and assured the victims’ families that perpetrators would be brought to book.

Meanwhile, FUOYE students living in the community said they were afraid of attacks by herders and the reprisal attacks that they could generate in the community.

“The incident has created some tension in the campus community,” Samuel Ajala, a student of FUOYE, told FIJ. “Students have been advised to stay away from the matter and stay indoors till everything is solved.”

One of the student leaders of the institution who simply identified himself as Soyinka said some of the students’ hostels are close to the location of the attack.

“The attack has given rise to fears but the Students Union Government has cautioned students to be vigilant and forget about reprisals.”
